BRANDING / M&M EXPLAINER
Consistency at Scale: The Secret of Global Brands
Consistency is not repetition for its own sake. It is a useful system that helps people recognize you across changing formats.
The short version
- Stable visual cues make brand recognition easier.
- Templates should support creativity, not replace it.
- Accessibility and clear editorial standards help systems scale.
Why familiarity matters
Every new format introduces design choices: proportions, hierarchy, crop, motion and context. Without a shared system, a brand can look unrelated from one channel to the next.
A small, thoughtful set of rules makes work quicker without giving away the creative range. Think of type scale, use of photography, color emphasis and how headlines are written.
Adapt the message, keep the identity
A short video needs different pacing than a long article. A product page needs details that an editorial cover can leave to curiosity. Yet both can share visual and verbal cues that signal the same creator.
Useful systems document what must remain consistent and where experiments are welcome. A team should understand the purpose behind each rule.
Test recognition and usefulness together
Show people a series of designs without the masthead. Ask what belongs to the same publication. Then ask whether the information is legible and whether the intended action is clear.
Recognition without usability is not enough. The strongest design systems make the product easier to understand while building a distinctive presence.
